VITAMINS, SUPPLEMENTS, HERBS

by Sarah Zitin

There are numerous vitamins, minerals, herbs and supplements available on the market today. The key is to have a knowledge and understanding of their purpose, function and affect on our lives. Health food stores are everywhere and information is available to all of you.

And for those of you who DON’T take supplements, we know that there is a way to make the foods we eat count in our lives and give us the nutrition and support we need all along the way.

The majority of us, however, need alternative sources of supplements in order to stay balanced and well.

In an average adult, for instance, 2000 milligrams of vitamin C a day is a good dose for helping to avoid the pitfalls of illness. The body uses this vitamin daily and moment by moment, and higher doses in some instances can be efficacious and necessary.

My father, who had prostate cancer, took 6000 milligrams of C a day, as was recommended by his health care provider. And he did not die of prostate cancer! His cancer, due to his choices of treatments, remained dormant for over twenty years!

Women, for example, usually need more calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3 and many different minerals in order to achieve balance as they mature. The body loses many of these elements as a person gets older, and it is important to supplement the body with as many different varieties of support as possible.

B vitamins are also vital for people as they age because they support the nervous and cardio-vascular systems, in addition to many other functions.

Importantly, there are different kinds of diseases that respond to different kinds of supplements and these additions are a vital part of arresting disease or deleting it from the radar.

Another example: multiple sclerosis patients often require large doses of vitamin D3, as studies have found that these people are depleted of D3. They also are recommended to be cautious about their diets because the fungus, Candida, often plays a large part in depleting the myelin sheath which protects the nerves in the brain.

Another issue with multiple sclerosis which has been discovered is that people with this disease often have extraordinarily high amounts of the toxin, mercury, in their systems, and that when the mercury is removed, there is a significant improvement in SOME patients.

In yet another example, arthritis is a wide-spread problem in our society, especially among older men and women. There is a variety of foods, herbs and supplements which are recommended, such as foods rich in complex carbohydrates, with lots of fruits and vegetables. Detoxifying the body, which cleans the joints, muscles and connective tissue (to say nothing of the rest of the body), is a good remedy for helping with the pain and inflammation of arthritis.
